Sacrifices

As long as Jesse stayed on the life raft, he was fine. He clutched the tablet to his chest and breathed a sigh of relief as the island self-destructed behind him. Within the confines of the floating raft, he could think of his next move.

The Tablet of Wisdom required a harrowing journey to uncharted lands, of which there were few in the 20th century. It required sacrifice.

“Hey, asshole!”

Jesse jumped and turned. Floating next to him, his old partner looked angry. A bullet hole still bled from his translucent forehead.

“How…?”

“How am I alive? I’m not.”
