Living Vessels: Prologue

There was something she found haunting about his eyes in that moment. In a breathless moment, the two soulmates locked eyes across the bow as the ship rocked tumultuously on the vengeful sea.
He rushed to her, pushed a dark curl behind her ear. Gold met green.
“Wait for me,” he demanded of her.
“I will,” she swore. “Don’t forget me.”
His lips tilted up in his characteristic smirk he reserved for her. “I couldn’t if I tried.”
Chaos surrounded them. Flames erupted from lanterns. She grasped the sides of her skirt and sprinted toward the men rallying the women and children into life boats. She looked back once. Twice. He watched her, just as he always had.
She blinked and he vanished.
